There are about 20 golf courses in the Canterbury region, many of them near Methven.
The are many places to walk around Methven. Not all of them require you to go into the river.
Mount Sunday was the site of Edoras in the Lord of the Rings films. It is a short 4WD trek from Methven.
Mount Sunday was absolutely beautiful and Brian and Paula gave us the freedom to climb the hill at our own pace, exploring the beauty and sites. At the top of Mount Sunday Brian even produced a sword which we excitedly waved around and took photos posing as our favourite lord of the rings characters. It was a fantastic touch which really added to the experience of being up in such a great place (and made taking photos that more fun!).. from Trip Advisor
On the way back from Edoras we were happily surprised to stop off by Lake Clearwater and we paddled around in the water a bit, skipping stones and enjoying the beauty of the lake. While we did this Brian and Paula were setting up a wonderful lunch for us on the shore with a picnic table, wine, homemade chutneys, cheese and more! It was truly wonderful and such a kind and personal experience- we hadn’t expected this and we were a bit overcome with how thoughtful this was and this was a highlight of the trip for us. Sitting by the lake, eating Paula’s homemade chutney and looking at the beauty around us was magical.
There are a number of boats running up and down the Rakaia Gorge, racing over the icy waters.
We did the 30 minute trip today and it was awesome! Beautiful spot, lots of fun (exhilarating spins and a real buzz skimming over the water), good commentary, plus a spectacular drive up on a fine Canterbury winters day.
We had a great trip up the Rakaia river on the discovery Jet. Thoroughly recommend the 30min trip. Great scenery, racing over the shallow water, spins and turns. And good old Kiwi banter. Great trip run by a great Bloke.
